It
is my great honor to assume the very prestigious position as the President
of the IADR -Southeast Asia Division at the turn of the century, for the
coming year 2000-2001. Again at this meeting we are hosting the Division
Annual Scientific meeting side by sidewith the SEAADE Meeting. Since the
majority of our member countries are developing countries, our main emphasis
in research should be in the line of prevention, promotion and public
health. Benefit from researches in the area of cost saving, improvement
of the delivery of care, minimum intervention, etc will lead to oral health
gains and finally to health gains to the population.
As
we enter to the New Millennium, challenges of "Oral Health for the New
Millennium" are for sharing and maximize resources, expertise, and experiences
from developed countries to developing countries. The success of the partnership
approach hinges on the commitment of developed and developing countries
will ensure sustainable development to all countries and all peoples.
Our
Division has grown up well in both quantity and quality of our research
activities for the well being of the population in the Division. We need
to join hand to improve our research activities and to encourage more
young members especially in developing countries to become better oral
health scientists. In order to keep the Division growing in research activities
and encourage the researchers to keep on doing fine works, prizes should
be awarded to the best papers. Since last year by Past President Professor
Toh Chooi Giat, tremendous developments have been initiated. In additional
of Travelling Award for the Hatton Award Competition and IADR 1995 PRIZE
(US$500) for the overall best paper, the other 10 Prizes of US$500 for
the best papers in eight research areas are awarded at the Annual Scientific
Meeting. These prizes are supported for the period of 5 years (1999-2003)
by generosity of our partner companies as follows.
Another
development is the Promoting Regional Research Development needed countries.
Last year, Past President Toh Chooi Giat organised 4 workshops in research
methodology in Myanmar and Vietnam. For the year 2000-2001, the Board
of Directors of IADR kindly concerned the need of developing regions and
granted US$12,000 to strengthen and activate research activities in Myanmar,
Vietnam and Indonesia.
Since
the financial difficulties are still facing many member countries, the
Council agrees not to collect divisional fee for the next few years. The
Division Office runs by surplus from the annual meeting. Participation
in the Division meeting as many as possible will financially support our
Division indirectly. At the same time, the conference will offer an opportunity
of researchers to build upon and strengthen their relationship with representatives.
The Division is now a teenager (15 years old) ready to grow up not only
the beauty but also the research talent and qualified scholar.
The
Local Organizing Committee (Taiwan) of the 15th IADR-SEA Annual Scientific
Meeting has tried to convene a comfortable and enjoyable scientific meeting
in the surrounded relaxing atmosphere. May I hope that I will see all
of you and many more of your country friends in Taiwan at our Division
Annual Scientific Meeting in October.
