Dental School Visit

The Dental Faculty of UKM (The National University of Malaysia) recieved its first intake of students in May 1997. Situated in Kuala Lumpur, about three kilometers north of the Petronas Twin Towers, the Dental School lies between the charming gardens of the historic Institute of Medical research and the spawling, concretised Kuala Lumpur Hospital. The Faculty buildings were converted to their present use after the former occupants, the clinics of the Medical Faculty of UKM, moved to a state-of-the-art Teaching Hospital in the suburb of Cheras. It is intended that a purpose-built Dental School will be opened in Cheras towards the end of the present decade and it will then be possible to increase substantially the present annual intake of 48 students.

The basement of the main school building houses two Multidisciplinary Laboratories, one of which is equipped with CCTV, for teaching practical classes in basic science subjects. The ground floor contains a Primary Treatment Unit, Sterilisation Unit, Department of Oral Surgery, Simulation, Conservation and Prosthetic Laboratories and Student Computer Laboratory. Polyclinics maily occupy the second floor. The third (top) floor has a large multipurpose General Meeting Room, staff offices and a suite of small rooms designed for Problem Based Learning Sessions. In addition there is a wing that contains surgeries for senior and postgraduate students and for the use of staff in treating private patients.
